The Apple Watch Series 11 arrives in a box that's now thin enough to feel slightly surprising. Apple has trimmed the Watch packaging consistently since Series 7, and the Series 11 box is noticeably slimmer than what Series 9 buyers received two years ago. The watch itself has also gotten thinner — 9.7mm case depth vs. 10.7mm for the Series 10. Neither change is dramatic on paper, but together they affect how the watch feels on the wrist.

I ordered the 45mm Series 11 in Starlight Aluminum with a Sport Band from Apple.com ($429). Apple's Watch boxes are now wrapped in a thin recyclable paper sleeve — the Watch sits horizontally inside, face-up, with the band already attached.

Everything in the Box

  • Apple Watch Series 11 — with the band of your choice pre-attached; I ordered a Sport Band
  • Additional band piece — Apple includes both sizes of the Sport Band so it fits wrists of different circumferences; one attaches to the watch, the other goes in the box
  • USB-C Magnetic Fast Charger cable (1 meter) — Apple updated Watch charging to USB-C with the Series 9; the Series 11 continues this with the same 1m cable
  • Documentation card — single folded card pointing to the Watch app setup process

No power adapter. Same policy as the iPhone. The MagSafe charger works from any USB-C port or adapter — Apple sells a 5W adapter that barely provides rated charging speed ($19), or you can use any USB-C adapter rated at 5W or higher. Third-party options from Anker work correctly with Apple Watch.

The Thinness Up Close

Apple's main marketing claim for the Series 11 is a 30% thinner profile than previous generation. In hand, this reads as "noticeably flatter" rather than dramatically different. The difference is most apparent when you press the side button — the crown has also been slightly reduced in depth, which changes how it feels to use while wearing.

The thinner profile changes the watch-wearing experience in one meaningful way: it snags on shirt cuffs less. If you've worn an Apple Watch with dress shirts and found the watch height catching on the cuff when you extend your arm, the Series 11 is better in this regard. The tradeoff is a smaller battery. Apple quotes the same 18-hour battery life, which our testing will verify, but the battery capacity is physically smaller due to the reduced case depth.

Band Included: Sport Band

The Sport Band is Apple's standard inclusion with the base models. The new Sport Band uses a revised fluoroelastomer compound that feels smoother against skin than the original formulation. It's a minor change — this is still a silicone-style band — but the first-wear feel is more comfortable than previous Sport Bands. The pin-and-tuck closure system is the same.

A note for people coming from older Watch models: Apple changed the band attachment mechanism starting with Series 9. Older bands (Series 8 and earlier) are not compatible. If you have a collection of older bands, they won't fit the Series 11.

Build Quality First Impressions

The Starlight Aluminum finish has a warm silver tone — noticeably warmer than "Silver" aluminum and closer to champagne. The display (Always-On Retina LTPO, 2000 nits peak) looked excellent in direct sunlight during the initial setup. The front glass curves subtly toward the edges — slightly more pronounced curvature than the Series 10 — which affects how watch faces look near the edges.

Setup takes about 8 minutes if you're restoring from a previous Apple Watch backup: open the Watch app on iPhone, hold the new watch near the phone, scan the pairing code that appears on the watch face, and let the restore run in the background. For first-time Watch users, the process is similar but involves more permission prompts for health tracking features.

The Charger Issue in Context

Apple's decision to exclude a charger has been consistent policy for several generations. For someone adding a Watch to an existing iPhone setup, this is fine — they already have a USB-C adapter. For someone buying an Apple Watch as their first Apple product, or as a gift for someone without Apple hardware, the additional $19-49 charger cost is friction that doesn't need to exist.

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 7 ($299) includes a charging dock and a standard USB-C adapter. Garmin's Fenix 8 Solar ($899) includes a charging clip and an AC adapter. Apple's Series 11 at $429 includes neither. This isn't a new observation, but it's worth noting for gift buyers specifically.

The Box Verdict

The Series 11 arrives in characteristically minimal Apple packaging. The thinness improvement is genuine and noticeable. The Sport Band quality is slightly improved. The USB-C charger cable is included but nothing to plug it into. If you already have USB-C adapters at home, the omission is inconvenient but manageable.
